An offense

It’s not new that Bengaluru (commonly known as Bangalore) Infrastructure has not been able to cope with abrupt increase in vehicular traffic. It’s very common to see potholes on most of the roads in Bengaluru. In tandem with this even the motorists have no driving sense. Everybody is in hurry to reach their destination and have less patience to bear others on road.

In such circumstances it’s quite common to see small vehicles like Mopeds, Two wheelers either driving on pavement or crossing over the road divider (Median). To admit even I used to do such non-civic things in the past but not anymore these days – I’m more civilized now ;-p

I pass through Intermediate Ring road everyday to reach my workplace. The outer ring road has two U-turns; one under Indiranagar flyover and the other near the military training school entrance. This means anyone who wishes to go the other way has to drive this approximately 1/2 km distance to come on the other side of the road. Obviously it seems painful to many to drive this extra 1/2 km distance just to reach the same point but on other side of the road. Cars drivers are left with no choice, they will have to cover this distance. But exceptional is the case for two wheelers. No, No, I’m not saying Read the rest of this entry »

Can I insure my Job?

with 10 comments

While at work I prefer listening to Radio instead of using Music Player like iPod. The other day on Radio (Radio Mirchi 98.3 FM) there was this interview with one of leading Insurance Company Head- Arg! I don’t have much details on the interview. The point is that this executive was talking about insurance and how these days people are insuring different non-tangible substances even including the Marriage Reception to hedge if it rains or people don’t turn up to the reception as in expected numbers.

Following my previous post on Job Risk in the gloomy market what struck is whether on the sames lines as marriages can we insure our job and get compensated only when we’re fired? On the contrary will the Insurance company provide such a policy to salaried individuals?

I know in reality this is remote possibility but in the virtual world say it’s exists. Given such a policy exists, how will an Insurance company verify whether the policy holder indeed got the pink slip. One possibility is that if the Employer hands the relieving letter stating that the Employee in question is being shown the door. Terrific, that’s a legitimate way. But, again what negative impact will it have on the Employee’s career. Will he be able to easily get new job given that he has been fired from his current job; Read the rest of this entry »

If not IT what else?

with 7 comments

Yesterday BofA (Bank of America) bought Merrill Lynch giving 0.85 BofA share for every Merrill Share. Also, Lehman Brothers filed Chapter 11 – Bankruptcy. That’s not the end of the story, AIG – The largest insurance company in the US is also on the verge. It has requested the Fed for emergency funds.

While this is what is happening in the US, I learnt that Satyam Computers, one of India’s leading software services company, is about to fire 4500 of its employees. It says that it’s their annual drill in which they show the doors to those employees whose performance is not up to the mark. It’s not just Satyam many IT firms are following suite.

I’m basically a Software Developer by profession working out of Bengaluru (or more commonly called as Bangalore). The common perception is that Software professionals have ‘The Midas Touch’, whatever we touch will turn into gold. Well that may be the past, these days most of the software guys are in the line of fire. Nobody knows when they’ll get the pink slip.

Because of the US market volatility due to Credit Crisis and Dollar depreciation the IT firms are making fewer profits and also the US companies have brought down the project outsourcing to some extent. That’s not all. The US Republic and Democratic parties are now talking about putting tough laws against outsourcing in their election campaign for the Presidential post. This means less IT work coming to India. The UK Govt. is also talking about issuing less Read the rest of this entry »

Hallucination

with 2 comments

It was 01 Sept 2008 00:15 AM when I got up while traveling by train back home to Raichur. The Train was expected to reach Raichur station at 1:30 AM and I had to be awake so as not to miss the station. 12:35 AM and I was sitting in the TTE (Traveling Ticket Examiner) seat to avoid falling asleep again if I had been in my berth any longer.

Slowly chain of incidents started passing before my eyes – kinda flashback. And one such thought was what if I’d not got up before train reached Raichur station. This means I’d to wake my mother, who was also traveling along with me, in a rush and alight the train which could prove fatal if something went wrong.

This reminded me of a day when my elder brother, Venkatesh, and I had gone to see off my mother to railway station. We actually misreckoned the time to reach the station and ended up reaching on time when the train started moving. Getting on to the train was not so difficult but while alighting, the train has picked up the pace. My brother managed to jump off the train but on my turn the train was moving at faster  pace and the compartment I’d been in was about to pass the end of platform. My instincts asked me to take a jump Read the rest of this entry »
